Appendix: ETC Rules & Clarifications

Tall Terrain

What is says in LFTF:

The only way to know what you can see from that hill is to get down to the level of the model and see if there is a Line of Sight over the building or other intervening obstacle to the opposing team.

How do ETC rules differ?

The LFTF interpretation is highly subjective and can lead to discussions that take up playing time. Therefore it should be ignored and the following ruling should be used instead:

Tall terrain blocks line of sight completely (refer to page 43 of the rules for definition of tall terrain). Players should imagine all tall terrain extending infinitely upwards, blocking line of sight.

What does this mean for LoS/shooting over friendly troops?

If a unit is on top of tall terrain (e.g. non-ground floor of a building, or on a hill/cliff, it may shoot over friendly troops which are not on tall terrain (e.g. sitting on the table or low terrain such as fields), and provided there is not other tall terrain which would otherwise block LoS.

Black Box Formation Support

What is says in the main rule book:

If you don’t want a full formation of a particular type, you can take compulsory units from the formation support units.

Formation Support represents a higher commander reinforcing your Formation with additional Units from other Formations. You can take any compulsory Units (other than the Force HQ Unit) from other Formations in your Force. You may only have one of each type of Unit as Formations Support, and only if you don’t already have it in one of your Formations.

What it says in LFTF:

You cannot field two units that differ in only the first part of the name, such as M4 Sherman Tank Platoon and a Veteran M4 Sherman Tank Platoon, and that have the same equipment, differing only in their ratings. Another example would be the Universal Carrier and Desert Rats Carrier Patrols. Although they are available in four different Formations, you can only take one of them as Formation support.

You cannot take a Formation Support Unit from a Formation Diagram in a Command Card.

How do I know if a black box formation support unit is legal in my list?

For the purposes of the ETC, “the first part of the name” refers to the first word of the unit’s name.

Two units are considered to have the same equipment if their armor (for vehicles), movement, and weapon stat lines are identical. The only exception is for “Limited” weapons: “Limited 1” and “Limited 2” are considered to be “the same equipment.”

If a Formation Support unit has an “Upgrade” Command Card applied to it, it is not considered to have different equipment (and thus is not a different unit).

If you have a specific case you are unsure about, please contact the RPC.

Does the clarification in LFTF refer to only two Units taken as Formation Support, or does it refer to Units in a Formation as well?

The clarification in LFTF should be applied to the rules in the rule book: If a Unit is the “same type” as per LFTF you cannot take it as Formation Support if you have already chosen it in a Formation or as Formation Support.

Example: If you have a formation with an M4 Sherman Tank Platoon, you cannot take a Veteran M4 Sherman Tank Platoon as Formation support.

Transport Attachment Pricing

Most Transport Attachment Command Cards are written very similarly, although not always exactly the same. Nonetheless there is some confusion about whether the cost on the card is per Transport model/Team or per Transport Attachment Unit.

What it says on the card (using LVT Amtracs as an example):

This Infantry Unit may add an LVT-4 Amtrac Transport Attachment. Add one LVT-4 Amtrac Transport for each seven infantry teams in the Unit. The characteristics of an LVT-4 Amtrac Transport are shown here and on the back of this card.

If a unit has more than 7 teams, do I pay 1 or 2 points to give them all this transport?

This Command Card costs 1 point regardless of how many teams are in the platoon, as stated in the Command Card Rules:

You may purchase a card multiple times for different Formations or Units in your force, giving each one the stated benefit.

Therefore, purchasing the card, for 1 point, gives the entire Unit it is attached to the stated benefit (see above). However, the number of transport vehicles/Teams within the Transport Attachment should equal to the number of passenger teams (from the parent unit), divided by the transport's Passengers rule, rounded up. Unless the otherwise stated amount of vehicles/teams is adequate to transport the entire Platoon it is attached to.

Additional FAQs

Q: If I want to use night fighting, when should I declare this to my opponent?

A: After the mission is selected and deployment areas are assigned, but prior to placing the first objective.

Q: Can minefields be deployed in a house?

What it says in the book: The location of a Minefield is shown by a Minefield marker. Any Team moving within 2”/5cm of a Minefield marker risks being knocked out.

A: Yes, you can place a minefield in/overlapping a house. There are not any other restrictions about where a minefield token may be placed (besides what is stated in the mission which grants them). There is even a handy picture of a minefield marker showing its size; note that it does not include any built in 'buffer' around it.

Q: Can One of my artillery teams choose not to bombard?

What it says in the book: If a Unit fires a Bombardment, all of its Teams with Artillery weapons must either fire as part of the Bombardment, or not fire at all. Other Teams can still Shoot as normal. ... You may fire fewer weapons to produce a shorter [smoke] screen if you wish.

A: The first "all" in the above passage can better be read as "each": Each team must either fire in the bombardment or not at all. This is reinforced by the passage on smoke bombardments stating that the player can elect to fire fewer weapons/teams. Teams which opt to not fire at all will remain gone to ground.

Q: Do infantry teams in transports (including riding tanks) block enemy teams from moving within 2"/5cm of them?

What it says in the rules: Infantry or Gun Teams cannot move within 2”/5cm of any visible enemy Tank, Infantry, or Gun Team in the Movement Step. Tank Teams cannot move within 2”/5cm of any visible enemy Infantry or Gun Team, in the Movement Step.

A: No. Passengers (including on a tank) to not create a "bubble" because although some may model infantry in transports or on their tanks, they do not count as visible infantry teams on the table.

Q: If I apply two command cards to a unit, one changing its stats, the other adding transport attachments, do the transport attachments also get the modified stats?

A: No. These are two separate upgrades to the unit they are applied to. One adjusts the stats, the other adds transports with their own stats. Note that virtually all "built-in" transport attachments (e.g. for mechanized infantry units) also feature different stats than their parent unit.

Q: When using the Brigade Mortar Stuka Zu Fuss command card, do I need to range in the normal mortars before ranging in the Stuka zu Fuss bombardment so as to have a marker to remove?

A: No. You can use (discard) the card even if the mortars are not already ranged in, as long as you perform a new range in for the Stuka zu Fuss bombardment, and re-range in the mortars after removing the Stuka zu Fuss marker.
